Backyard putting greens in Henderson

Henderson is a golf town. Anthem, Seven Hills, Lake Las Vegas, Rio Secco, DragonRidge — and a climate that lets you practise almost every day of the year. A backyard green here gets used in a way it never would in a place with real winter.

What makes a green roll true

The base

Putting green base is laser-graded and compacted far more precisely than lawn base. Contours are shaped into the base, not the turf. Any inconsistency underneath shows immediately as a putt that wobbles or dies.

Caliche complicates this. Precise grading requires excavating to a consistent depth, and hardpan does not cooperate. Where it is shallow we work through it properly rather than shaping the green around an obstruction — a green built on top of an uneven caliche shelf will never roll right.

The turf

Green turf is short-pile nylon, typically half an inch, with a stiff blade that stands up under a ball. Entirely different material from landscape turf.

Infill and rolling

Green speed is set by infill quantity and rolling. We tune it to your preference, and it is adjustable later — adding infill speeds a green up.

Design decisions

• Cups. Four to six on a mid-sized green gives varied putts without crowding.
• Break. A flat green gets dull fast. Real undulation is what makes practice worthwhile.
• Fringe collar. Longer turf around the green lets you chip on.
• Bunkers. Straightforward to build alongside, and in this valley sand is thematically at home.
• Approach. Twenty to thirty feet of fairway-height turf to hit into, if the lot allows.
• Shade and lighting. Worth planning. Summer practice happens early morning or after sunset, and lighting extends the usable day substantially.

Size

Useful greens start around 200 square feet. Between 300 and 500 gives real variety, which is where most residential greens land. Henderson lots are often generous enough for a green plus an approach.

Maintenance

Brush occasionally, blow off debris. No mowing, no topdressing, no watering, and no winter dormancy. The green plays identically in January and July.

What it costs

Putting greens run $13 to $25 per square foot — higher than lawn turf because of laser grading, contouring, cup installation and specialty turf. A 400 square foot green with a fringe collar typically lands between $5,200 and $9,800. Bunkers, approaches and lighting priced separately. Full pricing.
