Bermuda grass survives a Henderson summer only with daily irrigation, and it goes dormant and brown for months in winter unless you overseed with rye — which costs more water again. The lawn is either drinking or it is beige.

Artificial grass ends both problems permanently. It looks the same in July as it does in January, and it uses no water at all.

What a lawn installation involves here

We excavate three to four inches, removing existing grass and root mass. Where caliche sits shallow this is where the work is — the hardpan can require heavier equipment and adds hours. We probe for it at the estimate so the price reflects reality rather than optimism.

Then the base: graded aggregate, compacted in lifts, sloped to shed water. Henderson gets minimal rain and then a monsoon cell drops an inch in twenty minutes, so the base has to handle a burst rather than a drizzle. Caliche will not absorb any of it, so the base carries it to an outlet.

Turf is then rolled, cut, seamed, anchored at the perimeter and infilled, then power broomed. Most residential lawns finish in one to two days.

Specifying turf for desert sun

UV exposure here is punishing, and turf specification should reflect that:

  • UV-stabilised fibres as a baseline. Cheap turf fades noticeably in this sun within a few seasons.
  • Cooling technology for full-sun areas. It measurably lowers surface temperature and is worth the modest premium in almost every Henderson yard.
  • Pile height 1.5–1.75 inches for a lawn. Taller lies flat; shorter looks like carpet.
  • Face weight 60–80 oz for normal family use, higher for front yards on display.
  • Multi-tone colour with tan thatch. A single-tone green lawn against desert surroundings looks obviously artificial from the street.

Will it look real?

Good turf, well installed, is not obvious from the sidewalk. The tells are single-tone colour, visible seams and edges that do not sit flush against granite or hardscape. All three come down to product choice and installation care.

One Henderson-specific note: an enormous rectangle of uniform green in a desert setting reads wrong even when the turf itself is excellent. Breaking it with borders, planting and hardscape is what makes it look right.

What it costs

Most lawn projects run $8 to $15 per square foot installed. A 500 square foot back yard typically lands between $4,500 and $7,500 before rebate. Full pricing here.

Living with it

Rinse occasionally — more often here than in wetter climates, because dust settles. Blow off debris. Cross-brush traffic paths once or twice a year. That is the entire programme.

Answers

Common questions

Does artificial grass fade in Las Vegas sun?
Quality UV-stabilised turf holds colour for well over a decade. Cheap turf fades noticeably here within a few seasons — this climate punishes poor product more than most.
Can I put turf over my existing Bermuda?
No. Living grass decomposes underneath and the surface settles unevenly. It has to be excavated and removed.
What is caliche and will it affect my yard?
Caliche is a cemented hardpan layer found throughout the valley, sometimes only inches down. It is nearly as hard as concrete and does not drain. It affects excavation time and drainage design, and we probe for it before quoting.
How hot does it get underfoot?
In full sun it is comparable to a paver patio. Cooling turf lowers it meaningfully, shade helps more, and a rinse cools it within seconds.
