The specifications that matter, and the two that matter more here than anywhere else.
Turf quotes list numbers that mean nothing to most people. Here is what each does, so you can compare bids on something other than price.
This matters more in the Mojave than any other specification. Non-stabilised or poorly stabilised fibres fade visibly here within a few seasons. Quality UV-stabilised turf holds colour well past a decade under the same sun.
If a quote does not mention UV stabilisation, that is the first question to ask. It is also the most common corner cut on a cheap bid, because the failure appears years after the cheque cleared.
Reflective pigments or heat-dissipating fibre structures that measurably lower surface temperature. Costs modestly more. We recommend it for any full-sun installation here, and it is close to essential for pool surrounds, pet areas and play areas.
Ounces of fibre per square yard excluding backing.
Watch for quotes citing total weight rather than face weight — total includes backing and inflates the number.
W-blade and S-blade resist matting far better than flat blade. Diamond and C-blade are stiffer, common in pet and sports turf.
Standard backing is hole-punched. Fully permeable backing drains across the whole surface and is required for pet areas. Over caliche, permeable backing matters more than usual, because everything depends on liquid moving down and out fast.
At least two green tones plus a tan thatch layer. In a desert setting an expanse of uniform bright green reads as artificial from the street even when the product is good — a slightly muted, multi-tone turf sits better against granite and desert planting.
If you are pursuing the SNWA rebate, the turf must be permeable. Confirm this before ordering, because discovering it at final inspection is expensive. Rebate conditions here.
Manufacturer warranties typically run 8 to 15 years against UV degradation and fibre loss, usually prorated. Most exclude heat and reflected-glare damage, chemical damage and improper installation. More detail.
